We were very fortunate to have a visit from Her Excellency, Anna Brandt, Swedish Ambassador to Ireland on Tuesday 23rd June of this year. She was accompanied on her visit by Mr. Paul Keane, Honorary Consul General of Sweden in Ireland. Her Excellency was there to present First Prize to Juliet Hart in Fifth Class for her entry to a Swedish Art Competition. Juliet had to research some aspects of Swedish life and to draw a picture and write a paragraph to explain the reasons for her choice. Because we value languages so much in this school, Juliet also had to incorporate some of the Swedish language into her work. She did just that and did it so well that she was awarded First Prize in her group. Well done Juliet!
Her Excellency visited the school on a lovely sunny day. She was greeted by a Guard of Honour made up of representatives of every class in the school. She was ushered to the Halla where she was greeted by the children singing ABBA’s famous song, ‘Fernando’. The Principal introduced the Ambassador and explained the reason for the visit. She spoke about the close ties between the countries of the EU. This was followed by children from Second Class playing the European Anthem, ‘Ode to Joy’ on the tin whistle. After that, the Ambassador spoke about Sweden and answered questions from the girls in Fifth Class, all of whom had entered the competition. Her answers explained many things to us about Sweden.
After she presented the prize to Juliet, Her Excellency was very impressed by the entertainment provided by the children in Senior Infants and the children in the tin whistle group. She really enjoyed the singing and the Irish music.
More was to follow. The welcome ceremony was concluded by the children in Miss Lavelle’s Fourth Class playing the Swedish National Anthem on the tin whistle. The Ambassador was very touched by this. We finished off the day with all of us singing our own National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann.
Afterwards, we had some photos with the Ambassador under the flags of Ireland, Sweden and the European Union. A great day was had by all.
To the Ambassador we say, “Thank you! Go raibh míle maith agat! Tack så mycket!”
