We celebrated European Day of Languages in style! This is an important day in Europe as it celebrates all languages (not just European ones!). So we heard languages from every continent in Scoil Bhríde (Cailíní) and enjoyed listening to all of them.
Our senior classes have been exploring the different clothes worn in various cultures around the world. We got a chance to see some of these clothes, as the girls very kindly brought them from home. They had great fun modelling for the other classes.
Seachtain na Gaeilge is a big week in Scoil Bhríde (Cailíní). One of our events is Tráth na gCeist, where each table at the quiz is comprised of girls from 3rd to 6th. This way, everyone can help everyone else. A winning formula! This year the winners of our Tráth na gCeist are pictured below. Maith sibh go léir!
A group of language teachers from Germany visited us recently. They came to Scoil Bhríde (Cailíní) to see how we teach and learn languages here. They were very impressed!
The teachers visited the children in their classes and spoke to them about all the wonderful work they do in class. They were amazed by the beautiful dual-language books written by the girls in Second Class. They loved the dance performed by the girls and taught them a German dancing game played by children in Germany.
They loved the sound of the Irish language as they moved from class to class and they learned how to say ‘Dia dhuit!’ (Hello).
When they visited the Language Room, they were completely enthralled by the wonderful fashion show put on by the girls from a few different classes. They were really impressed by the ease with which the girls were able to comment, in a variety of languages, on the beautiful traditional clothes on display.
All in all, it was a most successful visit. Who knows? Maybe some of the marvellous ideas the visiting teachers got when they came to our school will be used by them when they go back to Germany! Gute Reise!
St. Brigid’s Day is a very special day in the calendar. Traditionally, the 1st of February has signalled the start of Spring in Ireland. Ofcourse, in our school it is extra-special as St. Brigid is our Patron Saint. Our school and our parish are called after St. Brigid – so she is very important for us.
Today we had a lovely celebration of St. Brigid’s Day. The girls in Mr Devlin’s Fourth Class led the ceremony. We all gathered in the school hall. The ceremony started with the Fourth Class musicians playing the music for ‘We Sing A Song To Brigid’. They then read poems and told us some stories about St. Brigid. The girls spoke in ten different languages. These were: Bosnian, English, Gaeilge, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Polish, Romanian, Shona, Slovakian and Tagalog. Some of the younger children in the Junior classes were thrilled to hear their own language in the school hall. The ceremony finished with the girls singing the old Irish song ‘Gabham Molta Bhríde’. It was a lovely, reflective ceremony. Indeed we all enjoyed it so much that we decided to sing our special song ‘We Sing a Song to Brigid’ all over again!
Well done to all the girls in Fourth Class and to their teacher Mr. Devlin.
We have been discussing the topic of clothes in Ms McKay’s room this week. We learned lots of vocabulary. We discussed what these words were in other languages too. We learned some Polish, Hindi, Arabic, Romanian, Malayalam and Portuguese. We designed outfits and used this vocabulary to label our pictures. We had great fun!!
